Modern medicine has enabled most people to live longer lives. Government projections show that over 70 per cent of UK population growth between 2014 and 2039 will be in the over 60 years old age group, an increase from 14.9 to 21.9 million people. Growing old can bring happiness, freedom and the joys of being a grandparent for many. However, some face challenges in old age, such as loss of dignity, reduced independence, and health issues. The key factor in these varying experiences is the overall health, both physical and mental, of individuals as they age. Those who are in good health and maintain it throughout their later years have a more positive experience compared to those dealing with multiple long-term health issues.
In his latest annual report, Professor Chris Whitty has focused on health in an ageing society, addressing issues aimed at enhancing the quality of life in a person’s later years and prioritising improvement over quantity. In this virtual event, he will be presenting the report and highlighting the importance of the local authority role in exercising local leadership and taking a greater strategic approach to enhance quality of life for older people. We will also be joined by a local authority who will be sharing examples of good practice and highlighting the ways they have promoted healthy ageing in their area.
Confirmed speakers include:
Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England
Cllr Beccy Hopfensperger, Cabinet Member for Adult Care, Suffolk County Council
