SUMMARY:LGA: Health in an Ageing Society – Chief Medical Officer’s Annu
 al Report 2023
DESCRIPTION:About this virtual webinar:\nOn 20 February\, the LGA will be r
unning a webinar on Health in an ageing society – Chief Medical Officer
’s Annual Report 2023 where Professor Chris Whitty\, will present and di
scuss the findings of his report. We would be delighted if you were able t
o attend.\n\nModern medicine has enabled most people to live longer lives.
Government projections show that over 70 per cent of UK population growth
between 2014 and 2039 will be in the over 60 years old age group\, an inc
rease from 14.9 to 21.9 million people. Growing old can bring happiness\,
freedom and the joys of being a grandparent for many. However\, some face
challenges in old age\, such as loss of dignity\, reduced independence\, a
nd health issues. The key factor in these varying experiences is the overa
ll health\, both physical and mental\, of individuals as they age. Those w
ho are in good health and maintain it throughout their later years have a
more positive experience compared to those dealing with multiple long-term
health issues.\n\nIn his latest annual report\, Professor Chris Whitty ha
s focused on health in an ageing society\, addressing issues aimed at enha
ncing the quality of life in a person's later years and prioritising impro
vement over quantity. In this virtual event\, he will be presenting the re
port and highlighting the importance of the local authority role in exerci
sing local leadership and taking a greater strategic approach to enhance q
uality of life for older people. We will also be joined by a local authori
ty who will be sharing examples of good practice and highlighting the ways
they have promoted healthy ageing in their area.\nConfirmed speakers incl
ude:\n\n Professor Chris Whitty\, Chief Medical Officer for England\n Cl
lr Beccy Hopfensperger\, Cabinet Member for Adult Care\, Suffolk County Co
