| | January 16, 2025

When

16 January 2025
13:30 - 15:00

Event Type

  • Public Health Tackling Racism and Inequality

This workshop brings together people working to reduce inequity through improving ethnicity recording across health and public sector services.

Objectives:

  1. To connect organisations and individuals working to improve ethnicity recording across health and public sector services.
  2. To share examples of work undertaken to improve ethnicity recording, and proposed actions for the future.
  3. To facilitate collaborative action to improve ethnicity recording, optimising use of expertise and limited resources and application of learning to practice.

Background

Ethnicity data has been used in the health and care system to understand, monitor and target efforts to address ethnic health inequalities. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted longstanding health inequalities experienced by people from ethnic minority backgrounds across the breadth of health and care services.

NHS England described five strategic priorities for reducing health inequalities ((NHS England, 2021/22 priorities and operational planning guidance: Implementation guidance).

In order to understand these inequalities, and to target efforts where they are most needed, PHTRI/NHSE need to ensure data relating to demographics, including ethnicity, is complete and accurate. Work is therefore needed to ensure datasets are complete and timely, particularly with regard to ethnicity coding.

The challenges regarding improving ethnicity recording are complex, and impact across health and care systems across the country at all levels. Through sharing learning and collaborating PHTRI/NHSE can collectively make better use of limited resources and make effective changes to improve ethnicity recording and health outcomes for our population.

The workshop will include examples of work across the country, to stimulate discussion on areas for collaboration, including:

  • ADPH London: Tackling Racism and Inequality Programme
  • East of England : evidence reviews
  • North West: Working group and literature search for interventions
