ADPH London Publishes Landmark Position Statement on Active Travel and Health
The London Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH London) has today published a new position statement highlighting the critical role of active travel in improving the health and wellbeing of Londoners and tackling health inequalities across the capital.
The Active Travel and Health Position Statement sets out a compelling case for walking, wheeling and cycling — either as standalone journeys or integrated with public transport — as a cornerstone of public health strategy. It provides Directors of Public Health (DsPH) and their teams with practical recommendations to embed active travel into local systems, strategies and partnerships.
Dr Will Maimaris, Director of Public Health in Haringey and Co Chair of ADPH London, said:
“Active travel is a powerful tool to improve health and reduce inequalities. Public health teams have the influence to make it happen — let’s walk, wheel, and cycle towards a healthier London.”
Key Highlights from the Statement:
- Health Impact: Active travel helps prevent and manage over 20 chronic conditions including heart disease, diabetes and depression. It is described as a “miracle cure” by the Academy of Royal Colleges.
- Equity and Access: Active travel is a feasible and inclusive way to increase physical activity, especially in communities disproportionately affected by poor air quality, road danger and transport poverty.
- Environmental and Economic Benefits: Shifting from car use to active travel reduces emissions, noise pollution and congestion — saving the NHS an estimated £1.7 billion over 25 years and boosting local economies.
- Call to Action for DsPH: The statement outlines seven key actions for public health leaders, including embedding active travel in strategy, working across council departments, engaging pan-London partners, and building public momentum.
The statement also includes data insights, policy links, and toolkits to support borough-level implementation and advocacy.
