When

5 February 2025
17:15 - 19:00

Event Type

  • Health Inequalities
  • Hybrid

The LGA’s next Smith Square Debate, which is being run as a hybrid event, will explore the current challenges and opportunities in tackling health inequalities – unfair and avoidable differences in health shaped by socioeconomic status, housing, education, and employment. Their expert panel will discuss the leadership role councils can play in addressing these disparities and improving outcomes for their communities.

Speakers:

  • Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, Founder, Ella Roberta Foundation
  • Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director of the UCL Institute of Health Equity
  • Cllr Louise Gittins, Chair, Local Government Association
  • Professor Bola Owolabi, Director, NHSE Healthcare Inequalities
  • Jason Strelitz, Director of Public Health, London Borough of Newham
  • Professor Kevin Fenton – Regional Director, OHID London and President, Faculty of Public Health

Key topics include:

  • Local government leadership: How can councils tackle the growing health inequality gap and improve outcomes for their most vulnerable communities?
  • Challenges: Are councils adequately equipped to address health inequalities? What barriers do they face in delivering change?
  • Opportunities: How can councils best use local data, community engagement and political will to create lasting improvements in health outcomes?

Their Smith Square Debates held in their Westminster office (SW1P 3HZ) are lively discussions on topics as wide-ranging as artificial intelligence, spending reviews, climate change and devolution in England.

When making your booking you will have the option to either book an in-person or virtual place (via Zoom).

The debate will be of interest to council leaders, elected members, council chief executives and deputy chief executives, council directors, council heads of service, policy makers and advisors, academics and health leaders.
