NHS Introduces First Long-Acting HIV Prevention Injection

Source: NHS, 17 October 2025

The NHS is set to offer a groundbreaking long-acting injection, cabotegravir, to around 1,000 people at risk of HIV who cannot take daily oral PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) tablets. Approved by NICE, this injection will be available at sexual health clinics across England and administered every two months. It works by blocking HIV’s ability to replicate, preventing infection after exposure.

This rollout marks a major step toward NHS England’s goal of ending HIV transmissions by 2030. PrEP is nearly 100% effective in preventing HIV, and the injectable option offers a discreet, accessible alternative for those facing barriers to daily medication—such as stigma or unstable housing.

Public health experts emphasize the need for increased funding to meet rising demand and ensure equitable access.
