ADPH London Statement on ULEZ One Year Report

ADPH London welcomes the findings of the London-wide ULEZ One Year report indicating that the expansion of Ultra Low Emission Zone has substantially reduced harmful emissions, leading to all Londoners breathing cleaner air, with more deprived communities seeing even greater benefits.

Dr Will Maimaris, Director of Public Health, Haringey and Co Chair of ADPH London said:

“Air pollution is a significant health concern in our capital and as many as 4,000 premature deaths per year have been attributed to toxic air, often linked to respiratory issues, lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

“Air pollution exacerbates health inequalities as some of our most deprived communities live near London’s busiest roads, where the report estimates an 80 per cent reduction in people exposed to illegal levels of pollution since 2019, increasing to 82 per cent in outer London, compared to a scenario without the ULEZ.

“Improving air quality through measures such as ULEZ is critical for supporting public health and reducing the burden of disease within our communities, enabling all Londoners to have a better quality of life.”
