ADPH Consultation Response: Banning sales of high-caffeine energy drinks to children

Children, young people and families · Commercial determinants of health · Consultations | 26 November 2025

The Government has committed to banning the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to children in England. This supports the ambition to raise the healthiest generation of children ever.

In our response to the consultation, we have outlined the reasons why we support a statutory ban on the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to children, including the growing body of evidence linking high-caffeine energy drink consumption with physical and mental health harms in children. These include, but are not limited to cardiovascular problems, sleep disruption, anxiety, poor academic performance, and behavioural issues in schools.

We also outline why we believe that the minimum age of sale for these drinks should be 18.
