Public health on an island

In the latest episode of PH Spotlight, made in collaboration with Panoramic Associates, Peter Bradley, Director of Public Health and Medical Officer of Health for the Government of Jersey reflects on his remarkable, international career.

Peter’s passion for public health was sparked by witnessing the social determinants of ill health in underserved communities, alongside a growing curiosity about health policy during his master’s in healthcare ethics. First-hand experience of recurring community health issues cemented his lifelong commitment to prevention a theme that has consistently guided his work.

Peter tells listeners about his time working in Norway, with its distinctive child-focused public health culture, his work to address inequalities in Wales and his involvement in the development of the Covid-19 dashboard.

Although Jersey’s island setting is unique, its health challenges mirror those of Europe: an ageing population, chronic disease, health inequalities, and logistical hurdles and Peter emphasises the importance of collaboration in meeting local needs effectively.

With over two decades’ experience as a Director of Public Health, Peter is also able to offer invaluable advice about the profession, which he describes as requiring courageous, adaptable leaders who care for their own wellbeing, learn from setbacks, and see their careers as marathons rather than sprints.
