Decrease in gonorrhoea infections
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has today published its Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Annual Report. The report shows a decrease in the number of gonorrhoea infections, which is a testament to the hard work of public health teams and their commissioned sexual health services, but there is still work to be done in terms of funding and resourcing.
Gillian McLauchlan, ADPH Co-Lead for Health Protection said:
“Public health teams have made a positive impact on sexual and reproductive health despite the pressures on funding and the increased demand for sexual health services across local authorities.
“It is essential that sexual and reproductive health services, which are paid for by the public health grant are adequately resourced so prevention, advice and treatment can be provided to everyone, regardless of their background. Long-term funding programmes, which we know prevent ill-health and save money are necessary when we are seeing demand for sexual health services, and rates of some STIs, increasing.
“Only by working together on an individual, community, regional and national level, will we continue to make good progress in improving sexual health outcomes.”
