ADPH appoints new Chief Executive

I am delighted to be joining ADPH at such a critical moment for public health and to bring my varied experience to bear in strengthening the impact and value of ADPH for its members and staff.

Layla McCay

Layla, who will take up the position later this year, joins ADPH from The NHS Alliance (previously NHS Confederation) where she was Director of Policy, Improvement, and Leadership.

Layla, who trained as a psychiatrist, began her policy career at the Department of Health before moving into public health and health system roles at the World Health Organisation and the World Bank. She then led policy and advocacy for two global public health charities and founded The Centre for Urban Design and Mental Health.

Outgoing CEO, Nicola Close MBE, who has led the organisation since 2007, said:

“This is a time of great challenge to the public health system, but also one of great opportunity. Our partnerships across the sector are stronger than ever, and thanks to the commitment and drive of our members, we are seeing promising changes to how public health is viewed by both national and local governments.”

Layla, who has also held academic positions at universities across the world, said:

“I am delighted to be joining ADPH at such a critical moment for public health and to bring my varied experience to bear in strengthening the impact and value of ADPH for its members and staff.”

Nicola, who announced her retirement earlier this year, added:

“It has been an absolute privilege to lead ADPH and support Directors of Public Health over the last 20 years. The public health community is very special, and I know that Layla will be warmly welcomed by staff, members, and stakeholders alike.”
