Cost of smoking in England: £21.8 billion
New figures published by ASH today show that the estimated cost of smoking, as quoted by the Government in the Command paper, Stopping the Start, has increased by 25% from £17.0 billion to £21.8 billion.
Landman Economics, who calculated the costs, have broken the figures down revealing a cost of:
- £1.9 bn to the NHS
- £1.2 bn to local authorities in social care
- £18.3 bn in lost productivity
These new figures underline just how important it is for the Tobacco & Vapes Bill to succeed – not just for our physical health, but for our fiscal health too.
