ADPH welcomes funding for suicide prevention

Greg Fell, ADPH President has welcomed yesterday’s Government announcement of funding for charities to help prevent suicide, saying:

“The £10 million funding for charities across England to help prevent suicide is of course very welcome news.

“However, it is important to remember that previously ring-fenced funding to local areas for this work has stopped, meaning that the voluntary and community sector are under increasing pressure to provide these services.

“Directors of Public Health and their teams have a wealth of knowledge about their local populations and have a long history of working with charities and other organisations at a local level. In order to really make a difference, the Government must increase resources and commit to sustainable funding for these already established programmes, as well as new initiatives. Only then will we be able to support more people and, ultimately, save more lives.”
