Statement: responding to Government’s 10 year drugs strategy

The government has published a new 10-year drugs strategy 'From harm to hope: A 10-year drugs plan to cut crime and save lives'

Alice Wiseman, Alcohol and Drugs Lead, Association of Directors of Public Health, said:

“Substance misuse is a significant challenge which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. We cannot just treat the symptoms and consequences of substance misuse, we must invest in and tackle the root causes – such as childhood trauma - too.”

“This new cross-departmental strategy – and the funding that accompanies it – must be welcomed, especially after years of cuts. Whilst high quality treatment services should be available everywhere, local needs vary and some flexibility around how money is spent and approaches designed is critical to efficacy.

“The strategy commits to working with ADPH on a national commissioning quality standard and we will engage constructively with the government and other key stakeholders to ensure it is outcomes-focussed.”
