Statement: Response to announcement of national lockdown

January 5, 2021 in ADPH Updates, Covid-19, Health Protection by Campbell Findlay

“As the 4 UK Chief Medical Officers outlined in their statement yesterday, COVID-19 cases are rising at an alarming rate and without strong action there is a serious risk that the NHS will be overwhelmed, and many more lives lost. A lockdown was an inevitable and necessary step

We need a renewed national effort to suppress transmission and are calling for a six month exit and recovery strategy which should outline how we can carefully ease lockdown measures whilst keeping infection rates low. This should include effective roll out of vaccines, robust delivery of test, trace and isolate and strong, consistent public communication and engagement. We ask the government to work with us to achieve this.

“Better days lie ahead, but for now Directors of Public Health are urging people to ‘stay at home’ to save lives and protect the NHS.”
