Good Food Local: The North East Report

ADPH North East has partnered with Sustain to pilot the Good Food Local approach that will see our region work towards a more healthy and Sustainable food system

UK councils have an important role to play in creating a more healthy and sustainable food system so residents can access affordable, healthy and climate- and nature-friendly food.

For over 10 years, Sustain has mapped and reported on Greater London’s borough-level commitments to healthy and sustainable food through the Good Food for All Londoners annual survey and report. A hugely effective tool for improving good food practice and policy among London councils, the survey and report act as an incentive to make progress, while providing guidance and a supportive network to help them along the way.

Thanks to funding from Impact on Urban Health, we are pleased to say that we are now rolling out this approach in the North East and North Cumbria.

In our annual Overall and Beyond the Food Bank tables and series of good food maps, Sustain shine a light on each council’s approach to food partnerships, household food insecurity and the wider food system. This year is the first time that we have participated so the scores mark the beginning of our councils’ journeys to ensure good food for all.

The North East Report

Celebration event 2024

We were pleased to invite colleagues from across the North East and Cumbria to Darlington College for the launch of Good Food Local: North East 2024.

As we approached the end of the first pilot year of the Good Food Local North East programme we hosted a celebratory event in conjunction with Sustain to thank our councils for joining the programme and completing their first baseline assessments, to showcase some of the fantastic work that our councils are doing to support healthy and sustainable food for all and to be inspired by key note speakers from across the food system.

This was the first of three events to be hosted throughout the project as we capture our progress and move towards launching the Good Food Local North East Report in 2026 which will showcase our work over the 3 years.

As this was our pilot year, the event did not share individual local authority scores.
