South East Network ADPH

Winchester, Hastings Old Town and Windsor

Welcome to the South East Network of the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH)

The South East Association of Directors of Public Health (SE ADPH) is part of the UK-wide ADPH network. It brings together all 17 Directors of Public Health from across the South East of England. We are a peer-led group focused on addressing public health issues that affect our region.

Our network

Our network works to strengthen the public health system through collaboration, shared expertise, and collective leadership. Network members actively identify and respond to both ongoing and new public health challenges. We aim to raise awareness of public health and offer expert advice across the region.

By working in partnership, we strive to improve health and wellbeing for everyone in the South East. We focus on improving population health, reducing health inequalities, and making better use of resources across health systems.

Our region

The south east of England covers nearly 7,500 square miles, and is home to over 9 million people, making it the most populous region in the UK. It includes busy cities, historic towns, and rural areas. The region is well-connected by road, rail, and air, with Gatwick Airport and major ports like Southampton and Dover supporting travel and trade. It also features two National Parks – South Downs and the New Forest – and famous landscapes like the White Cliffs of Dover and the Chiltern Hills.

The south east consistently reports some of the best health outcomes in England. Life expectancy is among the highest of all nine regions, and rates of premature mortality and key risk factors such as smoking and obesity are below the national average. However, health inequalities remain; whilst affluent areas report excellent health outcomes, many coastal and rural communities face significant challenges including higher rates of long-term illness, mental health concerns, and poor access to
health services.

The region plays a major role in the UK economy, with strong industries in technology, finance, education, healthcare, and the arts. Many people here have degrees or professional qualifications. Still, some areas – especially former industrial and coastal towns – struggle with low wages and fewer job opportunities. Housing is also a concern, especially in places close to London.

From the Battle of Hastings in 1066, to the D-Day preparations in 1944, the region has played a major role in British history. It is home to Canterbury Cathedral, Windsor Castle, and Blenheim Palace, alongside many castles, Roman ruins, and medieval towns. The region has inspired writers such as Jane Austen, Lewis Carroll, and Virginia Woolf, and continues to support the arts and creativity through numerous festivals, galleries, and theatres.
