As part of our ongoing 2026 CPD programme, we are pleased to share that we have another opportunity for colleagues to learn and this time with a focus on oral health and how local environments can be shaped to ensure good oral health for all. It will take place on Tuesday 29th September between 1pm – 2:15pm

The session will be delivered and contain presentations by three key speakers along with an opportunity for attendees to ask questions towards the end.

Each section of the session will have its own separate oral health related focus to cover as much detail as possible and to make the best use of time. Further detail on each speaker, their extensive work, and their area of focus for the day have been included below!

Matt Palmer– BDS, MFDS RCPS (Glasg), MPH

Public Health Speciality Registrar at Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council

Topic: Oral Health Improvement: How to prioritise interventions and Blackburn with Darwen Case Study

Bio: Matt is a public health speciality registrar who worked as a dentist for 8 years before joining the training scheme. He has recently worked on commissioning a new Oral Health Improvement Service in Blackburn with Darwen and is currently evaluating the Oral Health Improvement Strategy 2021-26.

Dr Deborah Moore – PhD, BDS, MPH, MSc, FDS RCS(Eng), FHEA

Consultant in Dental Public Health, Public Health Directorate, NHS England (North West)

Topic: Closing the oral health gap – shaping local environments to support good oral health for all

Bio: Deborah is a Consultant at NHS England North West and holds honorary research positions at the University of Manchester and the University of Liverpool. She is passionate about how structures and environments can be adapted to improve health and is an advocate for evidence-based population health approaches. She led the largest ever study on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of water fluoridation in adults (LOTUS, NIHR Public Health Research 2024) and is currently collaborating on a Cochrane systematic review of Community-based interventions for dental caries in children, and an NIHR evaluation of an alternative Paediatric Dental Pathway in Greater Manchester (PANDA study).

Dr Rizwana Lala– Wellcome Trust Research Fellow/ Honorary Consultant Dental Public Health, University of Sheffield

Topic: The impact of commercial involvement in sugar-related public health policies and practices on racialised communities

Bio: Rizwana is a mixed methods researcher with an interest in equality and diversity. Through her research, she makes evidence-informed recommendations to widen participation and representation of women, racialised minorities and those from deprived backgrounds across health institutions.
