SUMMARY:Words can hurt: Using the right language to talk about gambling har
 ms
DESCRIPTION:The way we think about gambling and its harms is often influenc
ed by a narrative pushed by the gambling industry\, which can add to the s
tigma experienced by people who are harmed. It can also ‘normalise’ ga
mbling activities and products.\n\nHow we communicate about gambling can l
ead to unintended consequences and widen inequalities. Alternatively\, it
can positively empower people to talk about their experiences and reach ou
t for support.\n\nFrontline staff\, communications teams and public health
leads have asked for guidance on how to appropriately communicate and dev
elop messaging about gambling related harms.\n\nIn this practical and inte
ractive webinar\, Dr May van Schalkwyk (Specialist Registrar in Public Hea
lth and Honorary Research Fellow\, London School of Hygiene and Tropical M
edicine)\, Robin Ireland (Honorary Research Fellow\, University of Glasgow
) and James Grimes (Head of Prevention\, Gambling with Lives) will present
how language and framing can cause harm\, including examples\, and the im
pact this can have on those with lived experience.\n\nA language guide dev
eloped in partnership between Greater Manchester\, the North East and York
shire and Humber to support communications will be launched in this sessio
 n. The webinar will allow the opportunity to discuss and learn from others
  working in this field.
