SUMMARY:Listening to Young People Differently
DESCRIPTION:CPD event for youth professionals taking place on Monday 7th Oc
tober (2 - 5pm) at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (North Wes
t London).\n\nThis free event has developed out of research undertaken wit
 h social workers\, youth workers\, criminologists\, safeguarding experts a
nd from dialogue with young people from London and Oldham.\n\nIn the compl
ex landscape of work with young people\, understanding their perspectives
and lived experiences is essential for effective support and intervention.
Young people told us they felt routinely disbelieved by the professionals
around them\, so we want to find ways to listen differently.\n\nJoin them
for a free CPD afternoon and hear young people’s experiences of the imp
act of being disbelieved\, and deepen your ability to listen\, validate an
d respond to the voices of the young people you work with. This research-l
ed event will include watching a 30 minute performance by award winning pl
aywright Farah Najib\, which is on tour in London and Oldham secondary sch
ools\, and has been developed in response to workshops in schools.\n\nThey
’ll then cover topics such as:\n\n- The impact of being disbelieved on y
oung people’s mental health and willingness to communicate\n- How to ask
the right questions to validate young people’s experiences\n- How to fo
ster an environment where young people feel safe to share their experience
s without fear of judgement\n\nWe invite youth workers\, teachers\, social
workers\, counsellors\, criminal justice professionals and any other prac
titioners committed to enhancing outcomes for young people to take part. Y
oung people who have participated in our project will co-deliver some of t
he discussion activities.\n\nThis event has been developed by the Royal Ce
ntral School of Speech and Drama in partnership with Little Fish Theatre a
nd Oldham Theatre Workshop\, two industry leading theatre companies who sp
ecialise in work with young people.\n\nThe event is part of the Credible W
itnesses AHRC funded research project led by Dr Amanda Stuart Fisher.\n\nD
