ADPH is pleased to announce this one-day participative workshop on System Leadership prepared and facilitated by Di Neale, Leadership Centre Enabler. The session will build on the learning of previous Systems Leadership workshops held in May 2018 but can also stand alone as a key leadership skill session for working effectively in complex systems.

Drawing on the art and science of Public Narrative, this workshop aims to help Directors of Public Health develop the skills needed to build compelling leadership narratives. Through a series of interactive sessions, delegates will focus on crafting stories that can motivate and mobilise others to join them in urgent action in order to further enable their work.

Attendees should expect plenty of interaction with colleagues and opportunities to discuss their priority areas.

The event will took place on Tuesday 27th November 2018 in St Brides Foundation, and was chaired by ADPH Vice President, Jim McManus. Promoting the Role of the Director of Public Health as a System Leader

At the end of last year, in collaboration with the Health Foundation ADPH organised a workhop for key ADPH stakeholders to explore possible approaches to promoting the role of the DPH as a system leader.

Disruptive Leadership

Monday, 3rd December 2018, Woburn House, London

With over 90 delegates in attendance, the ADPH Annual Conference offered thought-provoking discussions and explored different perspectives on this year’s theme ‘Disruptive Leadership’.

Morning Sessions:

Dr Jeanelle de Gruchy opened the day with some reflections on her first 200 days as ADPH President and set out her vision for the Association’s future. Click here to read the full speech.

Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health and Social Care,  followed with a compelling presentations titled “Can Public Health Professionals Change the World?”, in which she outlined her take on on disruptive leadership and offered her reflections on the impact of public health professionals on the wider health landscape.

Dr Ben Maruthappu, Co-Founder of NHS Accelerator and Cera, then offered an insight into the challenges and opportunities offered by the new digital environment with his presentation titled “Redefining Leadership in an Age of Digital Disruption”.

The Health Foundation Project Panel Discussion welcomed Dr Dagmar Zeuner, Director of Public Health for the London Borough of Merton, Nicky Hawkins, Communications Strategist at the The FrameWorks Institute and Tim Elwell-Sutton, Assistant Director of Strategic Partnerships (Healthy Lives) at the The Health Foundation. The panel offered a discussion on the impact of framing on public health narrative.

Afternoon Sessions: 

The DPH Panel Perspective, chaired by Rupert Suckling, DPH for Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, welcomed Dominic Harrison, DPH for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Greg Fell, DPH for Sheffield City Council, Ruth Tennant, DPH for Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and Helen Atkinson, DPH for Surrey County Council. 

Helen Howson, Director of the Bevan Commission, followed with an insight into the Bevan Commission and its role in transforming health and care in Wales.

Professor Tim LangProfessor of Food Policy at City University London finished the day with a presentation titled “Food Brexit: the Realities of Disruptive Management”, which gave  an insight into the challenges and opportunities that Brexit presents in regard to food production and distribution and how this will affect local authorities in the UK.

Narrowing the health inequalities gap

Our joint LGA/ADPH conference took place on 1 March 2018 and explored the serious health inequalities that still exist within our local communities and how they are being addressed.

Speakers included Steve Brine MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health and Primary Care, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Chair of ukactive and Lord John Bird MBE, Founder of The Big Issue.

Health Inequalities and Air Pollution: What can PH do to improve air quality?

The ADPH in collaboration with Defra and PHE hosted two Air Quality Masterclasses (London and Leeds) in Autumn 2017.

These masterclasses were relevant for those members who:

  • Need more information about the urgency around air quality;
  • Are aware of the urgency of the matter but need ideas on how to increase its priority.

Objectives were:

  • Equip attendees with the most recent information;
  • Craft powerful arguments.
