LGA/ADPH Annual Public Health Conference 2021: Rising to the challenge

February 3, 2021 in Events, Headline Events, Upcoming Events by Eleanor Cope

23 & 24 March 2021

Platform: Zoom

2020 has been a year like no other. The COVID-19 virus has taken a terrible toll and continued to resurge despite all-out efforts to control its progress.  Whilst our vaccination programme offers hope of a gradual return to normality, we know that the experience of the coronavirus pandemic and its impact, particularly on the most vulnerable in society, will long be with us.

Directors of Public Health and lead members for health, care and wellbeing have been at the centre of the effort to limit the spread and impact of COVID-19. It is more important than ever to take time to reflect on how local and national systems rose to the challenge of 2020 and how we can support our communities to emerge and recover from the impacts of the pandemic.

This annual conference, organised by the LGA and the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH), will include sessions on the future of the public health system, the new National Institute for Health Protection, public opinion on public health, and how we redouble our efforts on tackling health inequalities.

Delegates will be able to put their questions and comments to a range of experts and peers.

Conference sessions will take place across 23 and 24 March in the hope that this provides more flexibility for attendance whilst many of you continue to lead your local response to the pandemic.

23 March 2021, 10:00–12:00: In our opening session we will hear from Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England. This will be followed by a session on public opinion and public health, where we will explore how communities have engaged with public health messages and what we can learn from this.

23 March 2021, 14:00–15:30: In our first afternoon session we will hear from those working to ensure health inequalities are at the centre of the recovery and debate how we do this in a time of economic uncertainty.

24 March 2021, 10:00–12:00: In this morning’s session we will hear from a key government speaker on the latest exit strategy and discuss the future of public health and the wider health and care system with leading figures from the sector.

24 March 2021, 13:30–15:00: The final session will explore how the pandemic has played out on a global level and look to the future of collaboration and international politics.
