Our joint LGA/ADPH conference on public health explored and built on the challenging, innovative work being undertaken by councils and public health teams with their partners and local communities. Local authorities continue to make progress on improving health and wellbeing and tackling health inequalities since public health was formally transferred from the NHS in April 2013. The synergies between public health and local government are now beginning to pay off. At a time of great financial difficulty, Directors of Public Health are acting as ‘boundary scanners’, bringing together interesting partnerships from different sectors to meet wide-ranging objectives with maximum efficiency and effectiveness. As public health teams become more conversant with the details of local government’s activities, and as council staff develop a greater understanding of their own areas’ impact on health, new partnerships are developing.

The conference explored the continuing impact of the transition for councils, their partners and local communities.

Speakers included Nicola Blackwood MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health and Innovation and Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director of the Institute of Health Equity at UCL.

We hope to see you all again at next year’s event.
